How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Throughout the research & planning, construction and evaluation stages of our work, we used a wide variety of new media formats. By clicking the above picture, you can view my flickr analysis of some of the technologies used.

PLANNING & RESEARCH
  • Flickr - A photo-hosting website. It has the ability to add notes over specific sections of the image, in order to add analysis.  I used Flickr to analize exsisting magazine covers and movie posters for my research. Flickr made it a lot easier to analize a picture compared to a physical copy, as the notes can be easily edited/deleted compared to a physical copy.
  • Youtube - A free to use video hosting website. When researching existing horror trailers, I used YouTube. YouTube is quick and easy to use, and an integral part to new technologies as it can be used by anyone, not just professionals.
CONSTRUCTION
  • Final Cut Pro - My trailer was almost entirely made in Final Cut Pro, a video timeline editing program. Using it, I learnt how to upload my footage from a video camera, place/move/delete shots in the timeline, and add appropriate effects such as filters and speed adjusts to my footage. It is a professionally used program which can be difficult to get to grasps with. Using basic features, an amatuer video can be created, but by learning different features, and praticing with the different tools, we managed to achieve a more professional look in our trailer.
  • After Effects - We used Adobe After Effects breifly for the 'Arctic Productions' logo. After Effects is a digital motion graphics and compositing software, and one of the hardest pieces of software to learn to use, however once learnt, it provides extremely professional results. We used simple features such as masking, tracking, and key points in order to create our tites.
  • Photoshop - I used Adobe Photshop CS4 and CS5 in the creation of my ancillary products.  As a photo editing program, learning how to use it was a necessity. I used this program for editing the photos I took into creating my final products. Another professionally used piece of software, some of the finer features took a while to learn how to use.
 EVALUATION
  • Blogger - A blogging website use to host a variety of different formats, such as text, video and photos. We used Blogger as a portfolio of our work. It has the ability to host photos/scans of our planning, our videos and analysis from our research, our finished products, and our evaluations. It has a lot of advantages over a physical folder, as it requires no actual space, it can be organized easier, and easier to edit individual items. Being completely digital, there is nothing to be transported or lost, as the work stays online, and the website address can be shared for viewing of said work. It also has the ability to link with other online services such as Flickr, for quick and easy analysis of work.
  • Youtube - I used Youtube to host my finished trailer. This had several advantages over having a physical copy such as a DVD, as it is easier to share, and comments/reviews can be posted on the page.

  1. Your Flickr montage is fine but it doesn't really answer the question. Please add to this by writing directly onto the blog post and dividing your project into its three stages; planning and research, construction, and evaluation. Explain which technologies you use during which stage and what you found useful or annoying about them. In particular for construction you do need to say a great deal more about Final Cut Pro. It was this software that you created your final product on. Is industry-standard software and very demanding to use, with a steep learning curve. Explain how your gradually developing expertise actually enabled you to develop your ideas about the trailer and how it should look and sound further. Be specific here and include some actual tools or techniques that you use within the program. Finally for the evaluation section you need to explore how creating a blog to evaluate your work is different from other methods of evaluation you might adopt in other subjects. For example how do evaluate your projects in English language? What do you gain from adopting a web 2.0 approach to evaluation? What do you lose?
